Tomi Kettunen is a Helsinki-based guitarist best known for his distinctive playing style, which is deeply rooted in traditional jazz guitar, particularly in the style of Django Reinhardt. His playing combines fierce virtuosity with a strong emphasis on melody, swing feel, and soulful expression. He is regarded as one of the leading gypsy jazz guitarists in Finland and performs regularly at festivals and clubs with various musicians and groups including Hot Jazz Oh La La, 67 x Naked, Wanha Swengi, Django Collective Helsinki, The Swingtide and Elina Kardén & The Rifftigers. He is also recognized as a positive driving force in the local gypsy jazz scene, organizing regular jam sessions.
His latest release, Introducing Tomi Kettunen, is a collection of Django Reinhardt’s lesser-recorded compositions arranged to a large jazz ensemble emphasizing a rich palette of colors and harmonies. The album’s second half turns inward, with a series of solo guitar performances that offer an intimate glimpse into Tomi’s personal style.
